Wanting to get her GED was a reason she decided not to join the Amish church when her older sister Rachel did. She had planned on it because sharing her baptism event with her big sister seemed special. But she reconsidered because joining would close the door to any future learning. Once a person becomes baptized in the Amish church and accepts the rules of the Ordnung, higher education beyond eighth grade is forbidden. If she’d been baptized with Rachel and Katie, then sometime in the future decided to study and get her high school diploma, Judith would be shunned. She loved her family and scholars so any further education had to be before she joined the Amish church. She couldn’t bear to be shunned.
Question: What do you think of the Amish stopping at an eighth grade education? Can you see why this might be the best for their faith?
