Rachel Hershberger is twenty years old with blonde hair and green eyes. She is the oldest daughter and takes care of the family since her mother suddenly died from a heart attack. She’s a fantastic cook and her boyfriend, Samuel Weaver, especially loves her butterscotch pie. Because she put off joining the Amish faith, Rachel wants to experience rumspringa and get away from Fields Corner and go to Florida with her Aunt Carrie and cousin Violet. She looks forward to seeing the ocean for the first time. Samuel worries Rachel might fall in love with an English man, like her Aunt Carrie did. He doesn't want to lose Rachel and wants to marry her.
Judith Hershberger is eighteen years old with blonde hair and blue eyes. She's a schoolteacher at Fields Corner school and teaches the younger children. She dislikes cooking and isn't good at it like Rachel is. In fact, sometimes she burns the food. But she loves to sew and makes all the clothing for her family. She's also good at quilting. Judith loves to read and she's a scribe for the Amish-Mennonite weekly newspaper, The Budget. She hasn't been baptized and joined their Amish faith because she wants to get her GED which makes her father unhappy. For the first time, a young man asks her to go to a youth outing with him. Judith is nervous and excited.
